It was a Tuesday afternoon in 1984, and we were standing in a living room on Gage Avenue watching a family get taken apart. The company they’d called had quoted $49 on the phone. By the time the truck pulled away, the bill was $847, and the ducts still weren’t clean. The father, a machinist at the old Firestone plant, sat on his couch with his head in his hands. His wife stood in the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, not looking at anyone. We’d been subcontracting for that same company. We knew the playbook: bait, switch, upsell, leave.
We quit that Friday. Drove our own truck back to that same house the following Monday, cleaned the system properly, and charged what we’d quoted. That machinist’s name was Frank. He referred us to six neighbors. By October, we had our own shingle: Bellows Air Duct & Vent Co., named for the oldest air-moving tool there is, the one craftsmen used before anyone dreamed up bait-and-switch phone books. Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the Air Duct Cleaning Trade
We didn’t stumble into this work. We were pulled into it, the way some people get pulled into woodworking or rebuilding engines, by the feel of it.
Our grandfather ran a small HVAC shop in East Los Angeles through the sixties and seventies. As kids, we’d sit on a upturned five-gallon bucket in his garage after school, watching him bend sheet metal by hand, the smell of oil and galvanized steel mixing with the jacaranda blooming outside. He’d hand us a flashlight and have us peer into ductwork he’d opened up, teaching us to read the story written in dust patterns and discoloration. “The house tells you what’s wrong,” he’d say. “You just have to know how to listen.”
That listening became our obsession. After he passed, we spent years working for other companies, learning what we could, saving what we didn’t spend on rent. But those years taught us mostly what we didn’t want to become. The industry was filling up with franchises sending kids in matching polo shirts who’d never held a screwdriver before orientation. Technicians trained to sell, not to see. We’d crawl into attics in July when the temperature hit 140 degrees, feeling the flex duct crumble under our palms, knowing the last company had blown air through a dirty system and called it clean.
